The most damaging of non-scientific thought afflicting the Muslim world is conspiracy-centered thinking. It hurts us
because it disallows proper diagnosis of the malaise that ails our society. When the diagnosis is wrong, the correct medication can’t be prescribed and the patient can never be cured. Conspiratorial thinking has taken a hold of Pakistani dining rooms and replaced conventional wisdom, sound logic and even common sense. First it was just the mullahs, then the garden variety “uncles” and now the educated youth. Conspiracy-centered thought in newspapers and households promotes the notion that Muslims are “targeted” by outside powers, preventing our nations from becoming economically developed or militarily powerful. There is some justification and some basis to these theories due to the regional history of colonialism, the great game, CIA backed coups, cold-war geo-strategic maneuvering (next article). However, this history does not justify the widespread contamination of logic and analysis by conspiracy-oriented reasoning in the Islamic world.
This Pakistani flavor of conspiracy theory rests on the idea that there are Western/Indian/Israeli forces just waiting to pounce on Muslim states, always scheming to attack them, or stab them in the back at the first available opportunity, with or without justification. According to the armchair jihadist, this attack may be aimed at foiling “Muslim unity”, weakening national economies, reducing Muslim military abilities, curtailing regional power or even invading Muslim states.
Conspiracy lovers ignore minor realities such as countries following their national interests. The conspiracy viewpoint fails to see this reality in international relations, and that it is a product of the interaction of state interests and balances of power among concerned parties.
Conspiracy theorists expose an inexcusable misunderstanding of how international relations work. They ignore common interests, compromise and agreement or relations among nations. Conspiracy lovers believe it is the “other” trying to curtail Muslim interests but not the interests of Buddhists or Hindus. Conspiracy lovers assume that Islamic history has been completely peaceful; that they never committed any wrongs against others. Instead we are the sole victims of attacks throughout history. We conveniently ignore the vicious and bloody conflicts among and within various Muslim and Muslim states.
Another conspiracy-centered thinking is the idea that Muslim and Muslim states have often been “lured” into a terrible blunder. The brilliant leader, Nasser, was lured into the 1967 war. The U.S. Ambassador lured Iraqi madman, Saddam Hussein, into invading Kuwait.
To the conspiracy theorist, things are never as they seem – there is always a sinister plot, a CIA or Mossad agent under the surface. Westerners are liars with one exception: westerners that support Muslim causes. The west has no morals whatsoever. It is us Muslims that have a monopoly on morality. This morality is exemplified in the rejection of the idea that Muslims could possibly have carried out the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Even as OBL admitted to the attack, even as Al-zawahiri sent a tape with “hero” Mohammad Atta in the background graphic. Even as we read newspapers of local Islamists killing a fellow student for playing guitar (In Peshawar), we can’t believe that 9/11 could possibly have been committed by the very same Muslims that detonate bombs in Shia/Sunni mosques.
In the absence of researched sources, the drawing room intellects in Pakistan rely on the following tools:
1. Circumstantial evidence used to cast doubt (“Why at this time?”) or comparing given incidents to others in different contexts.
2. Refuting the news by highlighting inconsistencies and using these percieved inconsistencies as de facto evidence.
It is always the Israeli Mossad or the CIA. Everything from international commerce to deficiencies in the municipal drainage systems are blamed on these omnipotent agencies.
3. The charge of infiltration is another one of our hobby other than Cricket. Anyone remotely liberal is a fill-in-the-blank agent. Accusations of cultural penetration, or so-called “foreign hand” – American or Indian in particular – are often brought up.
In general, the logic of this type of thinking contains a number of problems, the most important of which are:
1. Lack of understanding of the nature of highly complex political relations among states, the manner in which relations among intelligence services are run, or of negotiations, communications or secret deals
2. They also do not conceive of the possibility that locals can take independent if complementary positions based on their own assessments or convictions.
3. This mode of thinking is tied in most cases to the absence of any information of value regarding given events or interactions. This is often because relevant information is classified, or there is an agreement not to disclose or delve into it. Typically it is difficult for the accused parties to defend themselves.
Then there are the wild, crazy, lunatic and utterly confused claims and counter-claims. These theories are so out of touch from reality that can only be characterized as delusion. Despite the lack of even a minimum of logic, delusion-based conspiracy thinking is being widely distributed in some tabloid newspapers in the blogsphere, newspapers and television. It is most popular among the educated. This type of thought is linked to a complete avoidance of sound thinking based on objective analysis.
Here are just a few of the delusional sort:
1. Dodi Fayed killed to avoid coronation of a Muslim King of England (Let’s think thru the succession rules)
2. Effects of “Pokemon” on children (this would’ve been believable if the effect was on the parent’s purses)
3. “Mossad crafts” and “Mossad belts” said to cause infertility (Whatever technology this is, it does not work)
4. Israeli genetic bomb (How does this genetic bomb differentiate between the genetic makeup of semite jews and the semite arabs?)
5. Coca Cola spelled backwards spells “No Mohammad, No Mecca” (Coke hates Muslims so much that they made Mukhtar Kent, a Muslim, the Chief Executive Officer of the company)
6. World Trade Center is an Inside Job. (In America, you can’t kill a dog without being jailed let alone 3000 people. A president can’t have an affair without being almost impeached but the media neglects this story?)
7. KFC in Karachi burned down not by Anti-American extremists but the Pakistani government to distract the public (No need to burn KFC for that)
8. Balochistan to be separated from Pakistan rumored in 2005 (It’s 2010)
9. Anti-US books by some French Author is banned in America (If someone can name the mysterious author, we can search his books on www.amazon.com)
10. FBI interviewing everyone and anyone in Islamabad
11. Mossad chewing gum or candy making Palestinian youth immoral (Let’s send this gum to the UN and humiliate Israel)
12. No Jews in WTC (Not a single Jew had the humanity to warn a non-Jewish colleague of the impending catastrophe? How about a Jew such as Steven Feuerenstein? A highly consientious humanist whos is against Israeli and Iraqi occupations? http://www.refusersolidarity.net/)
13. The transponder in the 9/11 Pennsylvania crash was never found, why not? (It was – Hijackers spoke in Arabic as the door was being rammed down by passengers)
14. “No one was ever caught in America for 9/11″ – Hamid Gul (ISI) egged on by goofy American, Alex Jones. – (Sir, please read about Moussai)
15. Benazir killed by Americans – Hamid Gul (ISI) – (Proof?)
16. Islamabad crawling with Blackwater operatives (Possible, but where is the conclusive proof?)
17. Musharraf – American Agent (But not during Kargil war, he was not an American agent at that particular time)
18. Shaukat Aziz – Indian Agent (Not sure where that came from, If someone else knows, please email me)
19. Zia killed by Americans (Americans killed the on-board American general as well? – In America, a parent can’t slap their own unruly, misbehaving child without getting a visit from the Police and their social services.)
20. Mumbai attack planned by RAW to get rid of an Indian officer who had critical knowledge about the Samjotha incident. (Why in the hell would RAW shoot itself in the foot?)
XX. On and On and On…. An entire post can be dedicated just to the delusional theories.
Conspiracy theories exists in non-muslim countries such as America, India & latin america. The differentiating factor is the prevalence of such thought patterns. Conspiracy theories are devastating our nation because it does not allow for the accurate analysis of the problems ailing our society.

The most important of these is the clash between European armies and Mohammad Ali in Egypt in the 19th century, which ended in the collapse of Mohammed Ali’s rule in 1840.Another is the clash between President Gamal Abdel Nasser and the West, including the United States, during the 1950s and 1960s.Recent events in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as Western rhetoric and policy toward Iran and Syria are interpreted as contemporary examples of the same kind of targeted attack on the Muslim world from the West.
This mode of thinking interprets the ultimate goal of the occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq, and perceived preparations for similar scenarios in Iran and Syria
